It was my friend who at first, told me to sing whenever I felt anxious. Anxiety is as pertinent in me as my life itself and I had no way out. Then, my friend Debapriti asked me to start humming a song when anything made me feel anxious. She was correct. Days later, I had the opportunity of learning about Art Therapy and Music Therapy. Art Therapy is the use of art for diagnosis and healing processes. Music is also a form of art.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is the condition of ‘constant worrying’. Anxiety can result from fear, a trauma, insecurities or it can also be hormonal. The most common symptoms include being scared, avoiding certain situations, shivering or a need for constant movement. Increased heart rate, sweating, and palpitations are also prevalent. It is a state of continued restlessness and overthinking.
What is Music Therapy?
Art Therapy involves the diagnosis and treatment of diseases with the help of Art. Art can be present in any of its forms. Music, Painting, Sculpting, Writing, etc. are different art forms which lend their hands in therapy. Music Therapy predominantly uses Music as the form. A patient can be asked to listen to different kinds of Music or practice singing or playing an instrument.
We are all well aware of the use of OM and related sounds in meditation and psychological healing. This therapy is a means of focusing all your energy towards something which is outside of you and letting it heal your subconscious.
Can Music be effective against anxiety?
Music, Aroma, and Colors have a more profound effect on us than we can imagine. Music is known to alter the mood of a person. Numerous studies have suggested its use for insomnia, stress and boosting calmness. While listening to music can make you feel relaxed and calm, going a step forward and singing can be more fruitful. You do not need to be a good singer, just go with the flow. This helps in releasing your negative energy and diverts your mind from your ‘fear’.
The use of music in treating Schizophrenia, Parkinson, depression, etc is not new. Even brain surgeries take the help of music for diverting the attention of patient during ‘live’ surgery. Music is also used in Visual Merchandising in the business world for affecting consumer behavior.
Even Gods and Goddesses are depicted to take the help of Music and dance when in outrageous circumstances. The dancing Shiva and Devi can be considered a perfect example.
Is anxiety a bad thing?
I genuinely do not feel so. We were created with a ‘tackling’ mechanism in our body which enabled us to run or ‘react’ in adverse conditions. Sometimes, the brain starts connecting one trauma or another with different events and starts making you feel anxious. Instead of feeling bad about yourself, you can always try to find the root cause of your anxiety and fight it.
